How to Use Repetition to Change Your Life

In Affirmations by Chris A. Parker

Do you want to change your life or a certain part of it? Do you want to turn it all around? Most people when they want to change their lives, often focus on all the external stuff, like a new home, new job, new friends or romantic partner, and so on. The reality is that changing our lives is an internal procedure.

The first step that we must do is to define where we are and why, and after that to determine where we want to go and how.

Where we are.

When we were born, we did not have any conscious faculties developed. The sensory factors were not yet developed. This is how we arrived, with no conscious mind. So there was the subconscious mind which was wide open to people that surrounded us to put anything in it. This is because the subconscious mind is programmed environmentally.

Karl Menninger from the Medical Foundation in Topeka said: “Environment is more important than heredity”.

Through repetition, over and over again (every day, every week, every month, all year) when we reach the age of four or five – where we can start to think – we had been programmed to think like the people who surrounded us.

That’s why we speak the language we speak because we were surrounded by people who spoke that language. If we grew up in a home that was bilingual, we would be able to speak both languages.

The same goes for all parts of our lives. We have been programmed to be like them. If they loved education the odds are that we love education too. Their beliefs probably are our beliefs now. That includes all beliefs, noble and harmful. This was our first mindset (with pros and cons).

After that age, we expose ourselves – deliberately or not – to many “repetition patterns” like education, religion, politics, advertising, and so on, that eventually develop our current mindset (or paradigm) that we must change in order to change our lives. Mental Program.

So, there is a mental program that has almost, exclusive control over our habitual behavior.  Almost all of our behavior is habitual. A habit is an idea that’s been programmed into the subconscious mind over and over again, and the mental program is nothing but a multitude of habits that are fixed in your subconscious mind, that literally control your behavior.

So, what we’re really saying is that this mental program is controlling our lives, we’re not controlling our life at all. Consciously you can think of one thing but subconsciously the other idea will be controlling.

But you cannot change your current life, with the same mental program that created it. You must change this program.

If it does not change ultimately the results will remain much the same, from one year to the next, and that’s really what happens to most people. You can try as hard as you want, to change some area in your life, if the mental program (paradigm) remains in control you don’t have any chance.

This is exactly where we are right now. Unfortunately, most people really don’t understand where they are, and this is the problem. They don’t know why they keep getting the same results over and over, and keep the same reoccurring problem.

Where we want to go.

Now, that we have realized why we have the current outcomes, we must set our goals of where we want to go, and what we want to change. It is crucial to have a definite goal to work on.

A clear goal can help us to identify the limiting beliefs that run through our mental program in our subconscious mind.  These are the areas that we must change in our minds in order to change our lives and achieve our goals.

“If you correct your mind the rest of your life will fall into place.” – Lao Tzu

How to change.

There are two ways to do it. One is an emotional impact. That is when something hits you so hard that your life will never be the same.

The second way is Repetition. That is the same method that has been used to form our current mental program. But this time we use it deliberately, by exposing ourselves to a new idea over and over again. Our effort is to impress the new idea to our subconscious rather than try to memorize it.

Religions, political movements, mystical organizations, advertisements, and other systems that want to influence their followers (and gain more followers) use the same method. All of them utilize the power of repetition, repeating certain mantras, affirmations, or slogans.

The same principle work in chants, incantations, litanies, and daily praying.  In fact, it is basic in all religions. It is obvious that all the founders of the great religions knew and utilized the power of repeated suggestion.

This brings us to recognize the power of suggestion, through which all forces operating within its limits are capable of producing phenomenal results. There are two types of suggestions:

  • Autosuggestion (your own to yourself)
  • Heterosuggestion (coming to you from outside sources)

Both put the subconscious mind in action, to begin its creative work. It’s the repetition of the same suggestion (chant, incantation, affirmations, etc.) that leads to a new belief, and once that belief becomes a deep conviction things begin to happen. Some examples.

Hitler used the same method and openly stated that the psychology of suggestion was a terrible weapon in the hands of anyone who knew how to use it.

Dr.  Rene Fauvel, a famous French psychologist, said: “Hitler had a remarkable understanding of the law of suggestion and its different forms of application, it was with uncanny skill and masterly showmanship that he mobilized every instrument of propaganda in his mighty campaign of suggestion”.

Let’s see how he did it. It is remarkable that not only achieve his goals, but he manages to make the Germans believe what he wanted them to. Hitler’s picture was everywhere. Slogans, huge signs, posters, and flags appeared throughout Germany.  Every day, all day bombarded them with all the means that he had – radio, press, etc.- until under the hypnotic influence of this subconscious attack, they started out to accomplish his dream.

But he wasn’t the only one that used this method. There were other nations who also had strong national beliefs (built by the same method over the years) and eventually won over the Germans.

Politicians all over the world employed this method to pass their ideas or policies to people. They start a continuous tap-tapping of the same thoughts (fearful or not) until they became the national chant. Of course, nowadays the main way they use is television.

The same goes for all successful advertising. The continued and repeated suggestion makes you believe a product first and then want to buy it.

What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create. – Buddha

Again and again, we see that the repeated suggestion has tremendous power over us. It overcomes our reason, acting directly on our emotions and feelings, and finally penetrates our subconscious mind. It is our master, and we do as we are ordered.

Thus we come to a conclusion. Every person is the creation of their own thinking and beliefs. As King Solomon said: “For as he thinkenth in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).

A very important point to mention is that the subconscious will go into action at once under the influence of the commands or suggestions it receives from the conscious mind (either is autosuggestion or heterosuggestion).

But the results become faster if the conscious mind accompanies his message with a mental image of the desired goal. It may be incomplete, but even if there is only an outline, it will be enough for the subconscious to start acting.

Certainly, imagination, visualization, and concentration are the main allies in our effort to change our subconscious mind and consequently, change our results.

The use of Autosuggestion.

The term autosuggestion applies to all self-managed stimuli which reach one’s mind. In other words, is self-suggestion. It is the communication service between the conscious and subconscious mind. The repeating thoughts which consequently become the dominating thoughts, (whether may be negative or positive), through autosuggestion, reach the subconscious mind and influences it.

The conscious faculty is the outer guard to the approach of the subconscious. All impressions are stopped by the conscious mind (our guard) and may be either passed on to the subconscious mind or rejected, at will. Despite the ability to have absolute control over the material which reaches our subconscious mind, we don’t exercise it always.

To transmute our mental program, so that it not only does no harm but on the contrary will help to realize our desires, we need to learn how to use autosuggestion in order to plant to our subconscious mind the desirable thoughts to act upon.

Some basic principles.

into reality. By removing time and space from the subconscious, the current results (that we want to change) will stop bringing their influence upon us, and we will be able to realize our wishes sooner.

If for instance, we plant in the subconscious the wish of not giving in to smoking tomorrow or any other time, the subconscious will have enough time to put some obstacles, directly or indirectly, in our way. In most of these cases, especially, in the presence of weak willpower, the subconscious will almost always succeed in causing failures.

On the other hand, if we exclude from the subconscious the concepts of time and space while planting our desire, normal consciousness is equated, and our desire must have the success we are expecting. This knowledge and the possibilities associated with it are very important for the use of self-suggestion.

The key to self-suggestion is to be found in the form of phrasing. It is that which, always and in every respect, has to be considered if you wish to practice autosuggestion. You have to prepare a precise sentence for what you want to achieve, in the present and imperative form, such as: “I feel better and better every day”, or “I am healthy, content, happy”.

Just saying your selected phrase without emotion, does not influence the subconscious mind. You need to emotionalize with belief all your thoughts or spoken words that you want to imprint in your subconscious mind, in order to take the desirable results.

Don’t feel discouraged if the first times you can’t control and direct your emotions. You start to develop a new ability and you must do the necessary work, but the outcome will be worth it.

Another significant fact is that the subconscious mind acts upon orders given in a spirit of absolute faith. So, you must see in your imagination and believe that you have already got the desired outcome. And the more powerful your belief, the more powerful your results will be either, negative or positive.

Don’t wait for a precise plan, through which you intend to accomplish your goal. Start to see in your imagination that you have already got the desired outcome, and in the meanwhile, the subconscious mind will help you to find the right plan. Of course, you have to be on alert for this plan, and when it appears, act upon it as soon as possible.

Subconscious is acting in the most effective way during the night when a man is asleep. In the state of sleep, the activity of normal consciousness is suspended, and the subconscious working in its place.

Therefore, the most suitable time for autosuggestion is the moment right before falling asleep as well as immediately after awakening, when we still remain half awake.

That does not mean that a different time would be quite unsuitable for self-suggestion, but these two moments are the most promising.

That is why we must never go to sleep in an emotional state of anger or depression. All these negative states of mind will continue to work at the subconscious level and would have an unfavorable influence on our lives. On the contrary, peaceful and harmonious thoughts always help us to improve our lives.

Here is a small gadget (derived from Franz Bardon’s book: Initiation in Hermetics) that will help you during the practice of autosuggestion. Its usefulness lies in the fact that avoid counting when you repeated the suggestive affirmation and therefore you can keep your concentration.

You can make it up by yourself using a small chain of 40 beads, or you can use a knotted piece of string. Also, you can use a prayer rope, komboskini, rosary, or something like that.

All you have to do is move a bead or a knot at every interruption.

It’s very simple to execute the autosuggestion process.

Before falling asleep, take your string of beads or prayer rope and, whether in an undertone, softly, or in your mind (according to your surroundings) repeat the phrase you have chosen and move one knot at every repetition until you reach the end of the string.

This is an easy way to count your suggestive affirmations while keeping your concentration.

The main point is that you imagine that your goal has already been achieved and has a real existence. If you do not feel still sleepy after 40 repetitions, get involved for a while longer with the idea that your desire has been completed and you continue to do so until you finally fall asleep with your desire still in your mind. You must try to transfer your desire to sleep. If you fall asleep by repeating the formula, the goal will be achieved.

Immediately after waking up, when you are still half-awake, you must take the beads and repeat the exercise once more. If you get up sometimes during the night for some reason, It is in your interest to repeat the exercise in order to enhance the power of suggestion and attain your desires sooner.

Further Instructions.
  • Do not stop this procedure, until it is a belief that you not only believe in your mind but you reflect in your speech and actions, as well. It will be a sign that the current mental program starts to change. In fact, this is the first sign that you are on the right route.
  • Inner conversation is an extension of the self-suggestion procedure. If you let thoughts connected with worries, fears, anger, or unhappiness occupy your mind. Eventually, they will affect the subconscious mind, which will accept them as real.
  • The subconscious mind regards the words and thoughts that we plant in it (deliberately or not) as a real situation, and therefore, tries to align the words and thoughts with reality. It works diligently to make these words and thoughts a reality in the life of the person that uses them.
  • So, it’s vital to be aware of what goes into the subconscious mind. Repeated words and thoughts are often amplified by repetitions, submerge in the subconscious mind and influence the behavior, actions, and eventually the outcome of the person involved.

Now the obvious question.

What kind of desires can be achieved by self-suggestion?

Every desire can be fulfilled as far as the mind, soul, and body are concerned. For example, refinement of the character, suppression of bad qualities, weaknesses, disorders, recovery of health, removal or promotion of different abilities, skills development, and so on. Certainly, desires having nothing to do with the personality as lottery numbers and such can never be fulfilled.

There is not only one way how to influence your subconscious mind. In fact, there are quite a variety of different ways in which this can be accomplished. Autosuggestion, hypnosis and self-hypnosis, visualization, religious rituals, magick rituals, subconscious messages, any kind of talismans and symbols, etc.

Regardless of the method you gonna choose, dedication and discipline are required. You have to stay strictly close to your program until your goal has been accomplished. With every repetition, you are one step closer to the desired outcome.

Don’t forget that your mental program has been created by continuous repetition, now you use the same method deliberately, to rewrite it in your own way.
